Charlotte Smith is the owner and curator of The Darnell Collection, recognised as Australia's largest private collection of vintage clothing and accessories. The collection includes over 5500 items, dating as early as 1730 and as recent as 2009. Charlotte's American Quaker godmother, Doris Darnell, bequeathed the collection to her in 2004. Unwittingly, Doris was collecting more than just fashion - she was documenting social history. Charlotte's books are inspired by these garments and documented stories. The collection represents fashion from 25 countries and includes couture by Lucile, Chanel and Dior, among many others. Charlotte travels extensively with the collection for exhibition and education, offering it as inspiration and as a fashion resource. Charlotte lectures on the history of fashion and works with fashion design students around the world. Charlotte was born in Hong Kong and has lived in England, America and France. She received a BA (Hons) in Art History from Hollins College in Virginia.
